Katie Marcus (and the other characters in her life)
Katie Marcus is the daughter of Jimmy Marcus. She is a girl that everyone loves and aspires to be. When she was younger, Jimmy was in jail and was not in her life until he came out and her mother passed away. Katie had grown up visiting her father at prison every Saturday with her mother. When her father got out of prison, two months after her mother's funeral, Jimmy took her in and felt as though they were two strangers not father and daughter.
Now, Katie at 19, is very close with her dad and works for him at the cottage store. They have such a great relationship, "At the store this afternoon, as she was leaving, she kissed Jimmy's cheek and said "Later Daddy," and five minutes afterward Jimmy realized he could still feel her voice in his chest. It was her mother's voice, he realized, slightly lower and more confident then the voice he remembered his daughter having and Jimmy found himself wondering when it had made its home in his daughter's vocal cords and why he hadn't noticed it until now."(53). In this quote, you can see the relationship has grown over the years and they are not strangers anymore. Jimmy and Katie have a great relationship and he is glad that she is in his life.
"Brendan Harris loved Katie like crazy, loved her like movie love, with an orchestra booming through his blood and flooding his ears. He loved her waking up, going to bed, loved her all day and every second in between. Brendan Harris would love Katie Harris fat and ugly. He'd love her with bad skin and no breasts and thick fuzz on her upper lip. He'd love her toothless. He'd love her bald."(49). In this quote they introduce Brendan Harris, Katie's boyfriend (fiance). It really shows that he loves her so much and that he would love her no matter what. That is foreshadowing the fact that although someone may not approve, he still loves her. In that case, I mean Jimmy Harris, her father. He absolutely hates Brendan's guts. This sucks because Katie and Brendan are planning to go to Las Vegas and elope and leave the Flats forever!
Katie also had two best friends, Diane Cestra and Eve Pigeon. They went out one night to celebrate Katie's last night in the Flats, last night, probably, in Buckingham. They all drank at the bars and were planning to have a good time. Katie is only 19 years old remember. They went out to dinner at East Coast Grill and got stuffed and then went to a bar. Before going to the bar they lit up a joint in the parking lot. After they went to the bar at Spires Pub, they then lit another joint and went to Curley's Folly. While driving, Katie thought there was a police behind them and her friends assured her it wasn't and she believed them and just sat back in the back of the car. While they were out Katie ran into Roman who was an old friend of Bobby O'Donnell. He kind of scowled her about being out at the bars and being drunk and what Bobby (her ex) would think of. He knew it would get tot Katie and it did, she wanted to leave the bar right away and get home to Brendan. That's when Katie left the bar, four bars later, probably 15 shots deep, she decided to drive home and drop off her friends. She was not in the shape to drive home 14 blocks and say goodbye to her friends.
That is when the good turned AWFUL.
